The Elkhart Historical Society will offer “The
Perils of Traveling in an 1800’s Winter”, presented by Karl Luthin, DVM,
as their Friday November 4th
dinner
lecture. In addition to having a busy equine veterinarian practice,
Luthin also owns KEL Equine Productions which has been involved in
numerous movies and mini series.
Multi faceted Luthin
is often the on-site veterinarian, or
reenactor, frequently
providing props, set
dressings, and horses, or as an advisor helping to insure the historic
accuracy of the equipment or costumes being used.
Some of the productions he has been involved in
are, “Gods and Generals”, “Glory”, The “John Adams”,
“Into
the West” mini series, “Gettysburg”, “Cold Mountain”, and most recently
providing a tremendous amount of equipment as well as the horse Daniel
Day Lewis
rode in
“Lincoln”.

“Welcome to Hollywood” with Karl Luthin, DVM Karl Luthin has been involved in over 60 movies, either in the capacity of on- site veterinarian, as a re-enactor, or as prop supply- - this category includes both live and plastic horses, uniforms and horse equipment from wars dating back to the French and Indian War thru WWI. It will cover many of his experiences while working on the movie sets in over 60 productions and mini-series. Multi-faceted Luthin is often the on-site veterinarian, or re-enactor, frequently providing props, set dressings, and horses, or as an advisor helping to insure the historic accuracy of the equipment or costumes being used. Some of the productions he has been involved in are, “Gods and Generals”, “Glory”, The “John Adams” mini-series, “Into the West”, “Gettysburg”, “Cold Mountain”, and most recently providing a massive amount of props as well as the horse Daniel Day Lewis rode in the movie “Lincoln”. Karl will be bringing film clips and slides from many of these movies, as well as movie posters, and the behind-the-scenes stories. |

Friday, February 8th,2019,
The Elkhart Historical Society will offer their first dinner lecture of
the 2019 series with the return of Karl Luthin, DVM. Karl’s
lectures always fill quickly due to his extraordinary life experiences
and story-telling skills. Well known in the equine veterinarian practice
with his daughter Kate and a skilled entrepreneur in gathering
equipment, uniforms, tack, horses and rolling stock to supply movies
with, Luthin continues to have an exciting life. His knowledge helps to
insure the historic accuracy of the equipment or costumes being used.
Luthin’s talk will cover a variety of venues including stories from many
of the different movies in which he has been involved, including
reenacting, veterinarian services, props, and problem solving- - such as
how to get a horse off the elevated platform in Chicago’s loop. Just ask
Karl about his fleet of Conestoga wagons and you will get a taste of the
charisma that surrounds this man. |
